The song was originally intended for Roan's debut studio album, Lavish, though as Roan stated, The song was made way to late in the process to make it, and thus it was scrapped from the album.

Roan later decided to release the song only via CD as a b-side to "Hold Me Down". She announced the release on December 29, 2023:

School Nights

[]

After the release of Roan's Kayleigh Rose EP but before the recording of School Nights, in 2015 Roan recorded this song and "Uppercut" with intention of them being released as stand-alone singles the following year. However, in 2016 Roan started making new music for what would eventually become School Nights, and the idea was abandoned.

In 2016, Roan reworked the song for School Nights alongside "Die Young". On March 16, 2017, Roan released the song with a music video and announced it as lead single for School Nights.

  • The single artwork was drawn by Abbey Lila.

The song, as stated by Roan, was made with intention of being dragged out and having no clear vocals or lyrics as to convey the distress that the protagonist of Lavish feels after her dispute with her boyfriend in "Clockwork".

Only certain words can be heard in the song, alluding to the feelings the protagonist is having throughout. Roan also revealed that a version with more clear vocals exists prior to the final version.
