"Good Luck, Babe!" is a song by American singer-songwriter Chappell Roan. It was released as a single on April 5, 2024, through Amusement Records and Island Records. Roan wrote the song along with Justin Tranter and Daniel Nigro, with the latter producing it.

Background[]

Roan wrote the song with Justin Tranter and Daniel Nigro, stating that she "was just wanting to write a big anthemic pop song," and that it "was a bitch to write."[1] Lyrically, the song speaks about compulsory heterosexuality, with Roan describing a relationship with a woman who tries to deny her romantic feelings for Roan and for women in general.[1][2]

Roan began teasing snippets in early March via Instagram. In April 2024, Roan sent an email to fans stating that her new single "Good Luck, Babe!" would be released on April 5, 2024, writing that the song is "about wishing good luck to someone who is denying fate."[3] She added that it would be the "first song of the next chapter," following the release of her debut studio album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess in September 2023.[4][5] Amusement Records and Island Records released the single through streaming and digital download.[6]

Composition[]

Musically, "Good Luck, Babe!" is a Synth-Pop track with influences of Baroque-Pop. It's composed in the key of B Minor and has a tempo of 117 beats per minute.

Lyrics[]

It's fine, it's cool
You can say that we are nothing, but you know the truth
And guess I'm the fool
With her arms out like an angel through the car sunroof

I don't wanna call it off
But you don't wanna call it love
You only wanna be the one that I call baby

You can kiss a hundred boys in bars
Shoot another shot, try to stop the feeling
You can say it's just the way you are
Make a new excuse, another stupid reason
Good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
Well, good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
You'd have to stop the world just to stop the feeling
Good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
Well, good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
You'd have to stop the world just to stop the feeling

I'm cliché, who cares?
It's a sexually explicit kind of love affair
And I cry, it's not fair
I just need a little lovin', I just need a little air

Think I'm gonna call it off
Even if you call it love
I just wanna love someone who calls me baby

You can kiss a hundred boys in bars
Shoot another shot, try to stop the feeling
You can say it's just the way you are
Make a new excuse, another stupid reason
Good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
Well, good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
You'd have to stop the world just to stop the feeling
Good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
Well, good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
You'd have to stop the world just to stop the feeling

When you wake up next to him in the middle of the night
With your head in your hands, you're nothing more than his wife
And when you think about me, all of those years ago
You're standing face to face with "I told you so"
You know I hate to say it, I told you so
You know I hate to say, but I told you so

You can kiss a hundred boys in bars
Shoot another shot, try to stop the feeling (Well, I told you so)
You can say it's just the way you are
Make a new excuse, another stupid reason
Good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
Well, good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
You'd have to stop the world just to stop the feeling
Good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
Well, good luck, babe (Well, good luck)
You'd have to stop the world just to stop the feeling

You'd have to stop the world just to stop the feeling
You'd have to stop the world just to stop the feeling
You'd have to stop the world just to stop the feeling

Trivia[]

  • Roan revealed that the song was originally titled "Good Luck, Jane!".[17]
  • The image that was used for the cover art was chosen because Roan didn't have time to do a photoshoot for the single, so she instead used a picture from a Grammys after party. Roan mentioned during an interview how the picture didn't have any meaning, due to the fact it was just a casual picture.[18]

Photoshoot[]

A photoshoot by Ryan Clemens was conducted for the song backstage at a Grammys afterparty in February 2024.
