"Kaleidoscope" is a song by American singer-songwriter Chappell Roan. It was released on March 31, 2023 and later became the seventh single off of Roan's debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. The track was Roan's first release after signing with Amusement Records (Daniel Nigro's imprint of Island Records).[1]
Background[]
After being dropped by Atlantic Records in August 2020,[2][3] Roan briefly moved back to Missouri to work on her music independently while working in a drive-through.[4] In 2022, she moved back to Los Angeles to continue working on her music while working a series of odd jobs, including as a production assistant and working in a donut shop. She then earned a publishing deal with Sony, and released a string of independent singles, "Naked In Manhattan", "My Kink Is Karma", "Femininomenon" and "Casual".[5] "Kaleidoscope" was announced as Roan's first release after signing with long time collaborator Daniel Nigro's imprint label, Amusement Records.[1] The song was announced on March 17, 2023 and released on March 31.[6] Roan wrote the song by herself.
A demo of the song was featured as a bonus track on Tidal but it went unnoticed until September 1, 2024.

Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
Here we go again, everything is fine
I guess we could pretend we didn't cross a line
But ever since that day, everything has changed
The way I write your name, a cursive letter "A"
Whenever it may be that you go on your way
If you really wanna leave, I'll never make you stay
[Pre-Chorus]
Whatever you decide, I will understand
And it'll all be fine and just go back to being friends
[Chorus]
And love is a kaleidoscope; how it works, I'll never know
And even all the change, it's somehow all the same
Turn it to the left and right, colors shinin' in your eye
And even upside down, it's beautiful somehow
It's never just a shape alone, love is a kaleidoscope
[Verse 2]
And if you ever find someone who could write
A better song for you, well, I'd love to see them try
Put it all in words and sing it all in tune
There's no one else who could, the only one is you
[Pre-Chorus]
And if you change your mind, I will understand
And it'll just take time to go back to being friends
[Chorus]
And love is a kaleidoscope; how it works, I'll never know
And even all the change, it's somehow all the same
Turn it to the left and right, colors shinin' in your eye
And even upside down, it's beautiful somehow
Every color of the rainbow, don't be afraid to hold it close
It's never just a shape alone, love is a kaleidoscope
