School Nights is the debut major-label EP, and second overall, by Chappell Roan. It was released September 22, 2017, through Atlantic Records, via digital download, streaming, and CD.

Background[]

After releasing her 2014 EP, Kayleigh Rose, Roan would recorded multiple demos afterwards, including "Uppercut" and "School Nights". However, it would not be until early 2016, after she signed to Atlantic Records, when she started recording for what would become School Nights. The EP was meant to be a "glimpse" of Roan's planned 2018 follow-up album, which was ultimately scrapped.

The EP was lyrically inspired by Roan's first romantic relationship, specifically about her feeling of falling in and out of love, and breaking up, which she stated in 2017 was "the most intense pain [she] ever felt". Sonically the EP was inspired by Lana Del Rey and London Grammar, along with songs from the 1960s.[1]

When talking talking about her process of writing and trying to find her own unique sound at the time, Roan stated:

When I write, I usually think about what I’m feeling. The feeling is what inspires the song. Then, I’ll think of a melody and plug the lyrics in once I figure out what the song’s about. I also have a list on my phone filled with words and phrases that I hear people say, or with sentences from books that I think might be cool for a song. Sometimes, it may take three hours to write a song, and other times three months. It all depends on the feeling.

Well, the hardest part of making the EP, School Nights, was making the sound. All the songs were written. They were acoustic versions, and I needed to find the right sound that wasn't too Lana. That wasn't too Lorde. That wasn't too Adele. And that just took a couple of years. I could have totally released it, but it wouldn't have been me.
