"The Subway" is a song by Chappell Roan. It serves as the third single for Roan’s upcoming sophomore album. The song was released on July 31, 2025.
Background[]
Roan first debuted the song on June 9, 2024 at the Governor’s Ball Music Festival since she believed that New York City would be the perfect place to debut the song at. [1] Ever since the song's debut, Roan would go on to perform the song at all of her live performances.
On June 16, 2024, at the Bonnaroo Music Festival, Roan stated that she was indecisive whether or not the song will be released.[2] On July 15, 2024, In an interview with Elle Brazil Magazine, Roan stated that she was still indecisive whether it’ll be the second single due to her focusing on touring rather than performing, calling them "two opposing work models" that do not co-exist.[3] On September 10, 2024, in an interview with Rolling Stone, Roan confirmed that The Subway would not be the next single to be released also stating that she “only likes performing it.” [4]
On March 14, 2025, Roan released a lyric video for her single "The Giver". "The Subway" was featured on a list alongside other songs all presumably intended for Roan's sophomore album.[5]
On July 7, 2025, Roan was spotted in New York City filming on a balcony for an upcoming project.[6] One day later, Roan was spotted again, filming a scene of her being dragged by a taxi cab. [7] Eyewitnesses have confirmed that the music video shoot was for "The Subway".
On July 19, 2025, posters began showing up in Manhattan promoting the song. [8]
On July 21, 2025, Roan's team began reposting videos about "The Subway" on TikTok, with Roan herself leaving comments on some of them. [9] [10] Another poster was then spotted in New York City, further promoting the song's release. [11]
On July 23, 2025, Roan's team released a snippet of the song and its respective music video via Instagram[12].
On July 25, 2025, more posters were spotted in New York City. [13] A wig used for the music video was also spotted on the balcony it was filmed at. [14]
On July 27, 2025, a wig was spotted wandering around the New York City Subway. [15]
On July 28, 2025, Roan announced the release date for the single. [16]
