Background[]
As stated by insiders, in 2018 Roan wrote and recorded the song with Amy Allen and Jay Mooncie with intention of putting it on her album Lavish. However, the song was scrapped in it's demo state due to not fitting into the album's genre, which was more of a "folk-leaning" project.
After Lavish was released Roan sought out to change her musical style, as she stated she disliked the album and School Nights. Roan got inspired by "Are You With Me?" and recorded her song "Pink Pony Club", which would lead to her creating her second studio album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.[1]
Theme[]
The song talks about protagonist of Lavish who feels as if only her partner can "handle" her behavior. She asks in the song if her partner is "with her" even after her "causing a scene".
Lyrics[]
When I leave I hope it's a hard pill to swallow
I bet you'll follow
You didn’t follow
I expect to wake up next to you tomorrow
I know I asked you to go, but don't
Oh, do the things that will calm me down
Tell me it do get better now
Oh, I think that we can talk this out
Are you with me?
Are you with me?
You're the only one who could handle me
Walking up and causing a scene
Oh, oh, I'm a lot to handle
You're the only one who could handle me
We [?] don't mean
Oh, oh, I'm a lot to handle
I only said that shit to, to get you going
Now I regret it, but I won't show it
Oh, do thе things that will calm me down
Tell me it do gеt better now
Oh, I think that we can talk this out
Are you with me?
Oh, are you with me?
You're the only one who could handle me
Walking up and causing a scene
Oh, oh, I'm a lot to handle
You're the only one who could handle me
We [?] don't mean
Oh, oh, I'm a lot to handle
