The song's title was first teased via it being registered on BMI Songview and pins being put on a Pinterest board titled "Hold Me Down Cover Art ideas".
Roan replied to a fan's request to release the song, “Hold me Down when?”, in which Roan replied with the message, “soon”.
During an interview from July 2018, Roan stated that she had two more singles planned after "Bitter", stating that the third one would serve as a conclusion to the "story she was trying to convey" and "would reminisce on past times".
On November 15, 2018, Roan posted a snippet of the song, teasing it's future single release. On November 20, 2018, Roan announced Lavish and "Hold Me Down" as the third and final single for the album.
